Here Comes the Bride
An interview with Dale Thompson by Tom Johns

When I started The Refinery, I really didn't know what I was getting into. I knew it was something I've always wanted to do. Not only am I learning that it's a daily chore trying to keep everything going smoothly, fighting attacks from hackers, checking to see if all the music is truly Christian music, (you'd be surprised) and a lot of stress, but I have also got to meet and know some great people. I've listened to Christian rock and metal since the early 80's and there are some bands that I have grown up listening to. One of my all time favorites is Bride. I now have the honor to interview one of my favorite singers ever!!! Mr. Dale Thompson.

Hi Dale, so what's going on with Bride?

Bride has been doing some writing. We have not had the time to dive in head first like we had wanted to by this time. Each band member has many outside interest and families and there has not been as much time for writing as we had hoped. For instance, I do competitive power lifting and have been in training, entering meets every couple of months. Lawrence our bassist rides broncos on the rodeo circuit and he has been riding practically every weekend. My brother Troy has been busy not only with his job at Fort Knox but also with his wife's catering service company. But we are back rehearsing. We will be playing Mexico City soon, have been invited back to Brazil and have also been invited to Europe to tour in March. We will continue to write until we have a great record ready to record.

O.K. Dale, I have to ask...How much do you bench? I just want to make sure I don't make you mad...hahaha

At a body weight of 215 I benched 560 pounds. I hold two Kentucky Bench Press Records. One in the 198 pound class and the other in the 220 pound class.

WOW! O.K., Brazil seems to be a frequent tour for you guys, what's that like?

The people in Brazil are very enthusiastic. They are the most energetic people we have ever met. They have an incredible passion for Bride.

Your son Alex, for those who don't know, is now your drummer. That has got to be a thrill playing in a rock band with your son. What's it like?

Alex is a professional and is extremely talented. He has a cool head and he plays his part. He is 19 years old now and he has much more talent than I did or do. He writes wonderful songs on both the guitar and piano.

He plays double bass, does that mean we may hear some metal from Bride?

We hope the next Bride CD will be a metal album.

Awesome! You and Troy have been doing this for over 20 years, most siblings can't get a long for more than 20 minutes, how is your relationship with him?

We never fight, seldom disagree. Our writing and performing is on the frequency.

Alright, you guys have always had a good sense of humor, what are some of the craziest things you guys have done?

We used to take two vans out on the road. One van was for merchandise the other for equipment. We would have van wars where we would throw things from one van at the other while driving at high rates of speeds, traveling to gigs. We threw pasta, shot bottle rockets, greased wind shield wiper blades so that when one van attempted to clean the eggs and such off their wind shield it would smear. On the way to Cornerstone one year we had to stop at a car wash to clean the vans. We stopped when we were all almost killed. Jerry McBroom our drummer at the time passed our van at over 100 mph. He almost clipped the front end of our van with the back end of his as he cut in front of us. So we called a seize fire to our fun.

Crazy! Now, Bride has rocked, recorded and toured for a long time, 20+ years!!! What would you say the most awesome thing or event is that has ever happened to you guys or you've been a part of?

The first year we played Brazil at the S.O.S. Festival in Sao Paulo. There were 130,000 people at this event.

And what was the most trying or difficult?

Dealing with record companies.

You've written hundreds of songs, which one is your favorite?

I do not have a favorite. Each song is special for me because each song has a little bit of my soul poured into it.

Bride has went through so many changes over the years. That's something you have to do to keep playing as long as you have. How do you get your inspiration to write your songs and what do you do to stay up with the music styles you've played?

I listen to the radio to make sure I know what is current. But we always stay with the bride sound. Our approach changes sometimes but for the most part we are Bride and that is what we do. My inspiration comes from life.

Your getting ready to go to Mexico, that's got to be pretty exciting. Tell us about what you'll be doing there.

We are playing a festival down there. This is our first trip to Mexico to play a show.

You have a very unique voice, it sounds great no matter what style you sing. What's your favorite style?

I like all kinds of music. I can appreciate the talent in melodic rock, rap and even hard core metal. I have always admired vocalist like Chris Cornell who can sing really well with a lot of force.

When did you first start to sing?

I have sang all of my life. I started in church and sang in groups in church up until I was 20 when I started playing rock music.

I know you're just starting the works for another album, any hints as to what to expect, or is it still too early?

We are being steered into a metal direction more so than hard rock.

"This Is It" seems to be doing really well. Is it your most successful album? If not, what album would you think is your most successful?

This is it, is our least successful CD. Snakes in the Playground was our most successful as far as album sales and touring from it.

Bride is definitely not quiet about their faith. What fruits have you seen and what opposition have you experienced?

I have received reports via, phone, email and personally from folks who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior because of our music. Also many have said they were convicted enough to give up their drugs and alcohol. Our biggest opposition has always came from conservative Christians who oppose rock music altogether. We have had protestors at many of our shows boycotting our tours.

You've toured with a lot of bands, who was the funniest, craziest, realest, most surprising?

The Newsboys were always fun to hang out with. Guardian could be very funny, especially Jamie Rowe. I was surprised at how humble Michael W. Smith was when we toured with him in Brazil.

What do you see in the future for Bride?

We will release another CD next year, then see where it leads. It is harder each year to find quality tour dates in the States.

How would you sum up, (if you can) the last 20+ years?

Amazingly unbelievable to think two country boys from Bullitt County Kentucky, raised in the back woods, could ever tour the world over and over again. We have seen so much, experienced so much and in all of this God has opened up our eyes to see His nature, His character and His love in a way we would have never known except through this ministry and band called Bride.

Well Dale I should let you get ready for Mexico. I hope and pray all goes well. It has truly been an honor my friend. Thanks and God bless.
